Detailed Description:
Beyoglu to Karakoy funicular tunnel was opened at 17 January 1875 and is being operated with an 350 HP electrical system. Two each, 16 m long car is carrying 170 passenger per trip through 573 meter in 100 seconds. The system is operating on a total 175-180 trip/day basis and is carrying approximately 13,000 passenger per day.
Within the scope of the Restoration Works :
Inorder to decrease the water leakage to a harmless level in the tunnel, tunnel brick walls were strengthened by injecting special polyurethane and acrylic base filling material.
Rails and catenary line were renewed.
Body of cars were renewed with stainless steel material and the car equipment were renewed and modernized.
Tunnel security systems (fire, normal and emergency lighting, emergency exit directions and communication system) were renewed and modernized. Security cameras were located at the stations.
Tunnel electrical systems (control panels,etc.) were renewed and secured.
Beyoglu and Karakoy stations were renewed, walls were decorated with ceramic tiles and engravings.
